Herbs have been traditionally used to treat a wide variety of physical problems. They have the advantage of strengthening our physical systems, rather than just treating symptoms. Every body is different, however. When using any herb for the first time, it is wise to take a lower dosage than recommended - many herbalists suggest taking only 1/4 of the recommended dosage for several days. If any reaction occurs, discontinue use and consult a holistic health care practitioner. If you are pregnant consult your midwife before using herbs.

We carry a wide variety of herbal salves and tinctures. Herbal tinctures are made by grinding herbs and preserving them in a base of spring water and pure grain alcohol, and in some cases pure vegetable glycerin. Tinctures concentrate and preserve the potency of the herbs. The amount of alcohol used is very small. Thirty to forty drops of tincture contain approximately the same amount of alcohol as one ripe banana. Tinctures should be taken in warm tea or water. Hot water can damage the potency of some herbs. Gently shake tinctures before using.

AVENA BOTANICALS is an herbal apothecary that was started in 1985 by herbalist Deb Soule in Rockport, Maine. They grow over 150 kinds of medicinal herbs and flowers for their tinctures, elixirs and salves in their certified organic gardens.
